If you know what real boring posters look like, you can avoid that inevitable failure in printing those marketing posters. Learning from other people’s mistakes is of course a mark of a smart designer. So if you do not want to make mistake in sending the wrong design to the poster printer, you should try and listen up. Here we have seven sure signs of a poster deemed boring. Avoid this from happening to your own color posters and you will have a better chance at succeeding with these prints.
1. It used the standard framed design template – One of the most commonly used design templates for posters is the standard framed design. This is basically a portrait type layout that has the main subject in the center, while a frame goes around the foster, housing the design.
While this design is pretty decent though, you should take note that many other posters have done this already for a long time. Adding your own poster designs to the mix won’t be a wise choice as it will just look like a derivative of those past works, making it boring. Avoid this of course and try to think and design on your own for poster printing.
2. Its images are “second hand” - A bad and boring sign for posters is the use of second hand images. By second hand images, I mean here images that come from the Internet, or the clip arts that you get from design editing applications. These are your easy to get images that may seemingly look great but are just too commonly used for your sake.
Your posters will be less than effective and even boring because people have already seen those images in many cases. So give up on using second hand images. Create and develop images and graphics on your own, it is better for your posters.
3. The messages are just clichés –Cliché’s are a sure fire sign of boring posters. It might just be a derivative quote or the full own cliché quote, but using those in the poster will just make it look more common or regular. Since many people should have already heard of these clichés, using them in your own prints will make it “sound” like a boring repeating disc that people will just not want to read or hear. So avoid clichés every time you create poster content.
4. When there is too much text content – If it is full of text, then this is also a big sign of bad posters. Color posters are visual mediums, with the main feature communicating lots of unsaid content. However, if you use too much text, readers will typically be overwhelmed and will just not want to bother reading the whole poster. So make sure you balance things out. You do not want to drive away readers from reading your posters of course. So try to shorten up your text content. Make them as concise as you possibly can.
5. When colors are faded or subdued – Boring posters usually have faded and subdued colors. It is just that these types of color themes have very low energy riding on them, making things boring and a lot more restrained. It might be best to switch to warmer colors so that there is energy and less boredom in the design theme of these posters.
6. When the fonts are old and uninteresting – It has been decades since fonts were first invented, and now people can actually recognize old style fonts against newer styled ones. If your posters are using the old and uninteresting ones then you should know that this is a big sign of having boring posters. People recognize these in their own little way and judge that the posters might not be as updated as it needs to be. So try to avoid this from happening and use newer fresher fonts.
7. When it does not invite – Finally, posters are boring if the invitation to act is not there. People need to be excited by what they have read in the poster. They need to be encouraged to respond with energy or with their own interest. Without that excitement, then the posters will just turn boring as people won’t really know how to respond to them. So do not forget to add that invitation to action.
